2023 NWFL Nationwide MD1 Wrap: First Mahi, Papa Soccer, Unification, Fortress pick opening day wins

The 2023 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Nationwide season got underway on Monday in Benin City, the capital of Edo State with four high-scoring games.
In Group A, First Mahi Babes came from behind to secure a 2-1 win against Gallant Queens.
Blessing Saleh had given Gallant Queens the lead in the first minute before a brace from Ijeoma Joseph completed the comeback.
Papa Soccer Academy also picked a 2-1 win over Wazbak International.
Omolara Odebode opened the scoring for Papa Soccer before Mary Gbogbala doubled the lead while Olaonipekun Olanike reduces the deficit for Wazbak.
Unification FC in Group B ran riot with a 6-3 win against Kaduna Queens.
Esther Stephen scored the first goal of the encounter for Unification in the sixth minute before Justice Yakuku equalised three minutes later.
Chidinma Chikwem restored Unification’s lead in the 19th minute from the penalty spot as Blessing Yakubu equalised five minutes later.
Omowumi Bello made it 3-2 while Jamimah Daniel evened the scoreline at 3-3.
Three more goals from Omowumi Bello, Chidinma Chikwem, and Ifunanya Emmanuel sealed a 6-3 win for Unification FC.
Fortress Queens picked a 4-1 victory over Castmog Ladies of Ogun State.
Enodumwenben Favour, Henry Ivie, Okitikpe Blessing, and Itebiye Caroline scored for Fortress Queens while Tosin Elijah equalised for Castmog Ladies.
Overall, First Mahi Babes top Group A with three points ahead of Papa Soccer Academy (3 points).
Heroes Queens, Gallant Queens, and Wazbak International are without a point.
Unification FC moved to the summit of Group B with three points ahead of Fortress Queens (3 points).
Chosen Generation, Kaduna Queens, and Castmog Ladies are without a point.
The third-tier women’s football league in Nigeria will produce teams that will gain promotion to second-tier NWFL Championship at the end of the season.
