2023 Revelation Cup an ‘eye opener’ for Nigeria, says former Uche Eucharia

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Former head coach of the Nigeria national women’s national team, Uche Eucharia says the maiden Revelation Cup wasn’t a bad outing for the Super Falcons.
The Super Falcons played three matches at the Revelation Cup invitational tournament in Mexico losing 1-0 to Mexico and Colombia before beating Costa Rica 1-0 in its final game as it continues to countdown towards the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Eucharia won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as a player and coach with Super Falcons and led the team to a win over Canada at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and believed the Revelation Cup wasn’t a bad tournament for Nigeria.
“The tournament supposed to be an eye opener for the coach and players,” Eucharia told Brila FM.
“So that they can know the area they can work on in the defence, attack, and midfield to know who should be at the Women’s World Cup and who shouldn’t be. The tournament for me was a good one.”
Nigeria will play another invitational tournament in Turkey before the Women’s World Cup later this year.
Randy Waldrum’s side ended its seven-match losing streak with a 1-0 win over Costa Rica.
Nine-time African Champions will face Australia, Canada, and the Republic of Ireland in the group stage of the World Cup.
Last term out on the global finals in 2019, coach Thomas Dennerby guided the team to the Round of 16, the first time the West African giants will make it out of the group stage since 1999.
1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter-final feat remains Nigeria’s best performance at the global women’s football Mundial and the team will hope to replicate that feat later this year in Australia and New Zealand.
