2024 U20 WWC: Christopher Danjuma opens up on reasons for ouster by Japan

Head coach of the Nigeria U-20 women’s national team, Christopher Musa Danjuma, has attributed his team’s early exit from the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to their struggles in defending against crosses.

The Falconets were narrowly defeated 2-1 by reigning vice champions Japan in the Round of 16, ending their promising campaign in Colombia.

In a match held at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota on Friday morning, Japan’s Miyu Matsunaga and Maya Hijikata scored in each half to secure the win for their team.

Despite a late goal from Nigeria’s Olushola Shobowale in injury time, the effort proved insufficient amidst driving rain.

Danjuma expressed his disappointment with the result and the team’s performance.

“It was a bad feeling because of the tactics of the Japanese team. We were able to curtail them, but our inability to defend crosses effectively was a major issue,” Danjuma said post-match.

“We did our best, but unfortunately, it was not enough. It was a tough experience, but also a valuable one for the team. I am confident that our next encounter will see improvements.”

The coach remains focused on the future, emphasizing the importance of continuing to develop young talents at the U-20 level.

The U-20 national team serves as a crucial pipeline for the senior women’s squad, with many current Super Falcons players having transitioned through the youth ranks, including notable names like Asisat Oshoala, Osinachi Ohale, and Christy Ucheibe.

Danjuma’s priority now is to refine the skills of the next generation and build on the experiences gained from the World Cup, ensuring that the team emerges stronger in future competitions.
