2026 FIFA WCQ: Historic win over Nigeria delights Benin Republic’s Gernor Rohr
By Wale Mustapha
Head Coach of Benin Republic, Gernot Rohr, has expressed joy over his team’s memorable victory against Nigeria at Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny on Monday.
The Squirrels came from behind to beat the Super Eagles 2-1 in their Matchday 4 clash of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Abidjan.
Goals from Jordel Dossou and Steve Mounie for Benin Republic canceled out Raphael Onyedika’s early strike for Nigeria. The victory has propelled Rohr’s team to the top of Group C, a feat that has left him relieved and fulfilled.
“It was a great game for us. This was the first time our ‘A’ team has beaten the Super Eagles. This win should give the boys more belief to perform better in future games. Young players in the country will also be inspired by this victory,” Rohr said.
Rohr’s satisfaction is palpable as his team continues to aim for a strong performance in the ongoing qualifiers.
