2026 World Cup Qualifier: Benedict Akwuegbu tips Nigeria to qualify amid poor run

By Saheed Afolabi

Former Nigerian international Benedict Akwuegbu has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a slow start, which has seen them earn only three points from three games.

Akwuegbu has rallied support for Super Eagles coach Finidi George, urging fans not to judge him based on a single game. He believes the team will return to winning ways under Finidi, starting with the upcoming match against Benin Republic.

“It’s just his first competitive game, and he needs our support,” Akwuegbu was quoted by Jamz FM. “You can’t judge him with one game, especially considering the improvement in the second half.”

Akwuegbu is optimistic about the team’s prospects, stating, “The team will improve under him, starting from the game against Benin. Nigeria still has a chance of qualifying from the group, and the game against Benin will prove that.”

A victory against Benin would significantly boost the morale of the Super Eagles, who are yet to secure a win in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
