Chairman of the Nigeria National League (NNL), George Aluo, is advocating for a significant shift towards community and private ownership of football clubs across the country.

Aluo emphasizes the necessity for governments at all levels to relinquish control of football administration to skilled technocrats, whom he believes are best equipped to effectively manage the sector.

During his recent birthday celebration, Aluo articulated his viewpoint, expressing concern over the continued government management of professional football clubs in Nigeria, stating that such ownership hinders the growth of football in the nation.

He asserted, “Our football can never reach its full potential under government ownership of clubs.” Aluo firmly believes that embracing community-based and privately-owned clubs is the key to catalyzing positive change within the Nigerian football landscape.

Citing examples such as Remo Stars, which operates under private ownership, Aluo highlights the success achieved when clubs are managed independently of government subvention. He sees this model as a blueprint for sustainable growth and excellence within Nigerian football.

“All we need to do and encourage is to have community based clubs and private ownership of clubs, and things will begin to change,” he continued.
“When you look at Remo Stars that is privately owned, you will discover that the club is well managed without government subvention.”
