Sunday Oliseh hails late Rashidi Yekini as Super Eagles’ GOAT striker

By Monsurah Olatunji
Former international Sunday Oliseh has revealed his greatest Super Eagles striker of all time.
Nigeria has produced several exceptional strikers, such as Daniel Amokachi, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Nwankwo Kanu, Obafemi Martins, and Victor Ikpeba.
However, Oliseh believes the late Rashidi Yekini was the best striker the nation has ever produced.
Oliseh, 49, played alongside many top strikers during his career, which makes his assertion noteworthy. Yekini scored 37 goals in 62 games, ranking first among Nigeria’s international scorers, and was named African Footballer of the Year in 1993. Unfortunately, Yekini passed away in 2012 at the age of 48 after a period of illness.
In a recent response to a post on X commemorating the 30th anniversary of Samson Siasia’s goal against Argentina in the 1994 World Cup, Oliseh lauded both Yekini and Siasia. He emphasized how Yekini’s assist for the goal was worth celebrating.
“Samson was simply exceptional. Look at his first-touch control to dribble the defender, his composure & the world-class finish,” Oliseh wrote on X.
“Yekini’s intelligence to first attract many players to himself before releasing Sammy with the assist is why he is the greatest striker Nigeria has ever had!!”
Yekini scored Nigeria’s first goal at the World Cup during a 3-0 victory over Bulgaria in 1994 and was the top scorer in the 1992 and 1994 AFCON tournaments.
