Former Chelsea and England captain, Karen Carney, has praised Fulham manager Marco Silva for his instrumental role in Alex Iwobi’s impressive resurgence this season.
Iwobi, 28, was in exceptional form during Fulham’s 3-1 win over Brighton on Thursday, scoring twice to help his side secure all three points at Craven Cottage.
Since joining the club, the Nigerian international has enjoyed a standout season, contributing five goals and three assists in just 14 Premier League appearances.
Carney emphasized how Iwobi’s shift to a more central midfield role has significantly improved his game.
“He has always been a worker, a grafter in the team, but it’s that quality. I think tonight, playing in that more central role, he had that responsibility,” she said on Premier League Productions.
The former midfielder also pointed to Iwobi’s growth as a player, saying, “He’s matured now, he’s 28, and he’s an experienced player under a manager that gets the best out of people. Marco is certainly getting the best out of Alex Iwobi there.”
Carney also noted the importance of Iwobi’s connection with his teammates, referencing his joyful celebration after scoring.
“Sometimes you find your home and you’re settled, and with a group of players that you enjoy playing with. The celebration, the connection with his teammates—so it’s a good sign for Iwobi. He just has to continue that.”
Iwobi’s development under Silva has been key to his resurgence, and Carney’s comments suggest that the midfielder is thriving both on the pitch and in his role within the team.
