John Obi Mikel names two Super Eagles coaches he admires

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has spoken fondly of two of the most influential coaches in his career, Augustine Eguavoen and the late Stephen Keshi, expressing deep admiration for both.
During a conversation with Victor Osimhen on the latest episode of his ObiOne Podcast, Mikel described Eguavoen, the former interim coach of the Super Eagles, as one of the finest managers he has ever worked with.
He also placed Eguavoen alongside the legendary Stephen Keshi, who passed away in 2016, as a major influence in his career.
“Keshi and Eguavoen stood out because of their leadership and personal support. They were more than coaches. They were like fathers to me,” Mikel said.
“Keshi believed in me from the start. He trusted me to lead the team on the pitch, and that gave me confidence. Winning AFCON with him is one of my proudest moments.”
Under Keshi’s leadership, Nigeria won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, with Mikel playing a crucial role. Mikel also spoke about Eguavoen’s influence, as he had worked with him at various stages of his career, starting from the U17 level.
“Eguavoen was there at the beginning of my journey,” Mikel recalled. “He made me feel important and gave me my first chance. Even later with the Super Eagles, he was always supportive and encouraging.”
Mikel firmly believes that Keshi and Eguavoen were key to shaping him into the player he became, and he hopes that today’s players have similar role models in their lives.
