Imo Striker Queens clinch maiden NWFL Premiership promotion

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Imo Striker Queens have secured their place in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership, becoming the fourth and final team to earn promotion from the 2025 Championship season.

On Matchday Four in Abiriba, Abia State, Nelly Orisakwe’s side sealed the feat with a commanding 2-0 win over Ghetto Tigers, confirming their ticket to the top flight with a game to spare.

Goals that made history

The breakthrough came in the 37th minute, when Amoke James rose highest to nod home the opener.

Chiamaka Damian then put the result beyond doubt in the 77th minute, finishing off a well-worked move to double the lead.

The result stretched Imo Striker Queens’ lead at the top of Group B2 to nine points, five clear of Osun Babes and Ghetto Tigers, making their promotion unassailable.

A new chapter for the Premiership

Imo Striker Queens join Sunshine Queens, Castmog Ladies, and Ahudiyannem Queens in next season’s NWFL Premiership.

Remarkably, while Sunshine Queens are the only government-owned team and boast previous top-flight experience, the other three clubs will be making their maiden appearance at the Premiership level.

They will join four privately owned teams in the Premiership; FC Robo Queens, Remo Stars Ladies, Dannaz Ladies, and Naija Ratels FC to make seven clubs in the top flight.

Other results

Earlier in the day, Moje Queens and Osun Babes played out a goalless draw — a result that mathematically ended both teams’ hopes of gaining promotion.

On the final day, Osun Babes will take on Delta Babes, while Imo Striker Queens face Moje Queens in what is now a dead rubber, with promotion already secured.
