Women’s football in Osun State has received a massive boost as the state government has approved Osun Babes FC’s participation in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Women Premier League (NWFL) season.
The approval, granted by Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke and Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi, who also serves as the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, marks a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to promoting gender inclusion and sports development.
For years, Osun Babes have been one of the state’s most recognizable sports teams, representing Osun in the women’s top flight with pride and consistency. The new approval signals the government’s intent to restore the team’s competitive edge and ensure their continued representation at the national level.
Governor Adeleke’s administration has made sports a major pillar of youth empowerment in Osun, focusing on developing facilities, nurturing talent, and supporting athletes — especially women — to thrive in their chosen disciplines.
“The approval for Osun Babes to compete in the new NWFL season shows the government’s firm belief in the power of sports to inspire and unite communities,” said Hon. Kehinde Johnson, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Football Matters.
“This administration is determined to give female athletes every opportunity to succeed.”
Osun Babes, affectionately known as Omoluabi Queens, have built a reputation for resilience and flair on the pitch. Their return to the premier league comes at a time when women’s football in Nigeria continues to gain momentum, with more attention, sponsorship, and fan engagement than ever before.
The support from the state government is expected to provide the team with essential logistics, improved welfare, and technical resources to compete strongly in the upcoming season.
Governor Adeleke and his deputy’s commitment to sports transcends competition — it reflects a broader vision for youth empowerment and gender equality through athletics. By ensuring that Osun Babes return to the big stage, the administration is creating a model for other states to follow.
As preparations for the new season intensify, optimism runs high among players, coaches, and fans alike.
