IMC attributes fine Nigeria Premier Football League start to referees and fans
By Saheed Afolabi
Chairman of the Interim Management Committee, Gbenga Elegbeleye has says the Nigeria Premier Football League referees will have no reason not to perform well following the increase of their welfare packages by 50 percent.
Seven away wins and eight draws have been recorded in 29 matches in the ongoing 2023 NPFL season and the incredible results are hugely attributed to the sincerity of purpose and doing their job excellently well of the referees.
And experienced Ondo-born sport administrator has lauded the peaceful conduct and sportmanship displayed by home fans inrespectively of the results of their teams, while also hailing the impressive work of referees.
“These referees have no reason not to do well because to whom much is given, much is expected,” Elegbeleye told media.
“In the first week of the season, we had four away wins, and on the second match day, we also had one away win and three away draws. It shows the level of officiating and the sincerity of purpose in our officials.
“The home team fans are now behaving themselves. In Edo, the away team was given a penalty in the 91st minute, and Remo Stars also scored their winning goal in Gombe in the 90th minute. So I commend our referees.
“One thing we have been doing to make the referees comfortable and the increment of their emolument by 50 percent. We also increased their transport allowance by 40 percent. And all these fees will be paid a day before they officiate the games.
“We also pay for their accommodation and feeding. So, these referees have no reason not to do well because to whom much is given, much is expected.”
