Cape Town City Explains Nsofor Departure: Family Matters Force Striker Exit

Cape Town City FC has clarified the departure of Nigerian striker Obinna Nsofor, shedding light on the circumstances that led to the player’s exit from the Absa Premiership club, three months after joining. Nsofor, who previously played for German second division club MSV Duisburg, scored once in 13 appearances during his brief stint with the South African team.

Former South African striker and current Cape Town City FC coach, Benni McCarthy, revealed in an interview with the South African daily Times that the decision to part ways with Nsofor was based on a lack of convincing performance. McCarthy, who also played for West Ham like Nsofor, mentioned that Chairman John Comitis had agreed to a review after six months, and it was deemed that the player’s contribution did not meet the club’s expectations.

“There are no hard feelings between us. He (Victor) understands. I felt he was getting fitter‚ better and stronger, but I don’t think the chairman was convinced,” said McCarthy.

However, Chairman John Comitis provided a different perspective, stating that Nsofor’s departure was a result of family issues. According to Comitis, the player’s family faced challenges in obtaining the necessary paperwork for relocation.

“We had a one season to it, but it was to be reviewed after six months, and he didn’t settle… his wife couldn’t get the visa, and child to come here,” explained Comitis to KickOff.com.

Nsofor, a former member of the Nigerian U-23s squad and a participant in the Beijing 2008 Olympics, has an extensive football history, including stints with Inter Milan, Chievo Verona, Lokomotiv Moscow, Malaga, and West Ham. His departure from Cape Town City FC highlights the complex dynamics that can impact a player’s career beyond the field.
