Kelechi Iheanacho Aims to Echo Okocha and Kanu Legacy in FA Cup Clash

Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho is poised to follow in the illustrious footsteps of compatriots Austin Jay Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu as Leicester City prepares to face Peterborough United away in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday. Iheanacho’s notable contribution included two goals, including the first-ever goal validated by the Video Assistant Referee in English football history, propelling Leicester to victory over Fleetwood Town in a third-round replay.
With a total of seven FA Cup goals in his professional career, spanning spells at both Manchester City and Leicester City, Iheanacho expressed his enthusiasm for the prestigious competition, stating, “I think it’s a great competition and it’s a great thing to be scoring in the FA Cup. I’m happy to be scoring in the FA Cup, and I’m working hard every day, so it’s a great cup to be playing in. I didn’t have the opportunity to watch all of the games [when I was younger], but I think playing in it now makes it more beautiful.”
Acknowledging the legacy of Nigerian stars in the FA Cup, including 2008 winner Kanu, Iheanacho emphasized the inspirational role played by these football icons in motivating him to pursue goals and success in the competition. Reflecting on the significance of the FA Cup for Nigerian players, Iheanacho noted, “I think the FA Cup has great memories, and I think there have been Nigerian legends that have played in it as well, like Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu.”
When questioned about his favorite FA Cup goal in England so far, Iheanacho highlighted the two goals against Fleetwood, describing it as a memorable moment that will be etched in both his and fans’ memories.
