Real Madrid’s struggles away from home in the Champions League deepened after Mauritanian forward Aboubakary Koita scored a historic early goal for AEK Athens.

Koita struck after only 12 minutes of Wednesday evening’s league-phase meeting in Greece, giving Real Madrid another difficult start on the road in Europe.

The 28-year-old collected a pass from former Real Madrid forward Luka Jovic on the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot into the bottom-left corner of Thibaut Courtois’ goal.

According to Opta, Koita is the first Mauritanian player to score in the history of the Champions League. He is also only the second Mauritanian footballer to appear in the competition.

Jordan Lefort was the first, featuring for Young Boys during the 2021-2022 Champions League campaign.

The goal was also Real Madrid’s eighth conceded in their past three away matches in the competition, according to French statistics provider Stats Foot.

Real Madrid conceded three times against Roma in the second round of the current season, although they won that match 4-3.

Before that, they allowed four goals away to Bayern Munich in the second leg of last season’s quarter-final, losing 4-3.

The result against AEK Athens therefore continued a difficult defensive sequence for Real Madrid in away Champions League fixtures, with Koita’s strike becoming the latest setback.
