Abuja considered as host city for 2024 Nigeria Beach Soccer League

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja is one of the centres being looked out to host the 2024 Nigeria Beach Soccer League (NBSL) which is set to kick off in the first quarter of the year.

Last season, Kebbi and Kaduna states hosted the league with the former staging the first and final phase.

Abuja has never hosted the beach soccer league since its inception in 2021 and Coordinator of Nigeria Beach Soccer League, Mahmud Hadejia revealed plans to ensure the domestic league is hosted by the nation’s capital.

“For next year, we should commence the national league in the first quarter which is going to be the fourth edition,” Hadejia, who doubles as the President of the African Beach Soccer Union (ABSU) told media.

“We are working seriously towards having Abuja as one of the centres to commence the league next year. We will also go across other parts of the country.”

In its fourth edition, the Nigeria Beach Soccer League has encouraged States to take part in the league, starting with state leagues where talents can be discovered.

“Beach Soccer in Nigeria has been growing year in and year out.” Hadejia, who was recently awarded the best performing beach soccer President and icon of sports administration for 2023, continued.

“We have been able to establish beach soccer in several states and starting from next year, we are going to other states to help them establish so that beach soccer can be played all across the country.

“Beach soccer can be played everywhere so long as we have the sand, we can play beach soccer, and have been part of us since we were kids when we started playing football barefoot on the sand.”

Kebbi BSC are the holders of the Nigeria Beach Soccer League after winning their second title in 2023.
