Ademola Lookman nets brace as Atletico Madrid cruise past Getafe in preseason test

Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman continued his impressive start to life at Atletico Madrid by scoring twice in a dominant 4-1 victory over Getafe in a preseason friendly on Wednesday, strengthening his case for a key role under Diego Simeone ahead of the new La Liga campaign.

The Nigerian international delivered a clinical first-half performance, finding the back of the net twice as Atletico outclassed their fellow Spanish top-flight side in another encouraging display during preparations for the 2026/27 season.

Lookman wasted little time in making his mark, opening the scoring in the fifth minute after reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area. The former Atalanta forward pounced on a rebound and calmly fired home from close range to hand Atletico an early advantage.

The 28-year-old doubled the hosts’ lead in the 35th minute, capping a slick attacking move with a composed finish beyond Getafe goalkeeper David Soria to register his second goal of the evening.

Getafe reduced the deficit five minutes before halftime through Alvaro Gutierrez, whose strike ensured the visitors went into the break trailing 2-1.

However, Simeone’s side reasserted their superiority after the restart, with Arnau Ortiz restoring Atletico’s two-goal cushion before Obed Vargas completed the scoring to wrap up an emphatic 4-1 victory.

Lookman’s latest performance will further excite Atletico supporters following his arrival from Italian side Atalanta, where he established himself as one of Serie A’s most dangerous attacking players.

The Nigerian forward has adapted quickly to Simeone’s demanding tactical system, combining his trademark pace, intelligent movement and clinical finishing to become one of Atletico’s standout performers during preseason.
