Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has tipped Nigeria to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nigeria will be looking to claim a fourth African crown when they travel to Ivory Coast for the 2023 AFCON slated to kickoff on January 13 to February 11, 2024.
After the national team failed to qualify for two successive continental tournaments in 2015 and 2017, Rohr qualified the team for the next tournament in Egypt in 2019 and led the Eagles to a third-place finish after a group-stage exit at the Russia 2018 World Cup.
The Franco-German was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, in December 2021 despite helping the Super Eagles qualify for the 2021 AFCON and guiding the team to the final qualifying round for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The current Benin Republic head coach, however believes the team have the quality to emerge victorious in Ivory Coast this year.
“Nigeria is one of the favorites, of course. I saw the list. So many great players and [with] experience. The strikers are fantastic; they need stability to be complete,” Rohr told Osasu Obiayiuwana.
The Super Eagles will kick off its campaign against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, January 14 at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, followed by a showdown against the hosts at the same venue four days later, and conclude its group stage campaign with a match against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, January 22.
