AFCON 2023: ‘It’s too dangerous’ – Victor Osimhen explains why he still wears mask

Reigning African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen has explained the reason for keeping his mask on despite his facial injury long gone.
The 25-year-old sustained an eye socket injury during a Serie A match against Inter on November 22, 2021 and the injury forced him to undergo surgery and was sidelined for three months as a result of the facial problem.
The V09 mask, which has become a distinctive feature of Osimhen’s on-field attire, now serves as an important protective gear to prevent further injury to his jaw and face.
With many criticizing him for keeping the mask believing it’s for fashion, the Nigerian striker explained in a recent interview that the decision stems from a previous injury, revealing that he still has two screws in his jaw and face.
“I have to wear my mask for the rest of my football career because I still have two screws in my jaw and face,” Osimhen told Phatill.
“In the last match against Cagliari, when I headed the ball, the goalkeeper hit my face and I bleeded even with the mask.
“So it’s too dangerous for me not to use it. I have to keep on using it.”
