Former Chelsea star, John Mikel Obi has listed Nigeria among the favorites to win the title at the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The three-time champions, known for their rich legacy in the competition with victories in 1980, 1994, and 2013, are once again poised to make a significant impact.
Jose Peseiro’s men are drawn in Group A with hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.
Mikel, who reminisces about lifting the prestigious title 10 years ago, ending a 19-year wait for Nigeria however recognizes the differences between his generation and the current squad.
Speaking to CAFOnline, Mikel highlighted the Super Eagles’ perennial status as one of the tournament’s favorites.
“We are always favorites this is every time we go into the tournament and it’s no different this time,” the former Chelsea midfielder stated.
“Everyone knows that we are one of the favorites – not the massive favorite but definitely one of the favorites.”
