AFCON 2023: Jose Mourinho throws weight behind Jose Peseiro’s Nigeria

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Chelsea and Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has expressed his love and best wishes for the Nigeria national team ahead of their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.
The 57-year-old AS Roma boss has always attributed his success to African players
It began at FC Porto with Benni McCarthy, and from then on, there have always been African players who played an important role in his achievements.
Players like John Obi-Mikel, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Emmanuel Adebayor, and Samuel Eto’o have all played a key role in his team’s triumphs.
It is also believed that the “Special One” as fondly called recommended the present Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Although,  he has always complained about the timing of the tournament as it always cost him his key players at crucial moments.
However, amidst the challenges posed by injuries and the disruptive impact of AFCON on the European football calendar, Mourinho remains focused on steering Roma through a challenging period.
With a famous passion and a remarkable career in football that spans decades, José Mourinho perfectly embodies the spirit of winning titles.
“I hope you won’t hold this against me if I say that I would like to see the Nigerian team, coached by my compatriot José Peseiro, or the Egyptian team, led by Rui Vitória, in that final,” The Special One said as quoted by Pulse Sports via Football .com.
“And I hope that Pedro Gonçalves and his Angola team go as far as possible. None of them will have an easy task, but who knows, maybe the Portuguese will spring a surprise here too.”
