Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has revealed why he has been ever-present at the Super Eagles camp at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
The former captain was in the stadium after the Nigerian team opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea, after which he met with players in camp.
Nigeria defeated the host nation 1-0 in their next game and the legend visited the dressing room after the match to celebrate the victory with the boys.
In a viral video of the event, Leicester City forward who has yet to make an appearance at this competition, Kelechi Iheanacho, was captured telling Okocha to always come visiting on matchday as it motivates the team.
“Senior, please always bless us with your presence on match days, you are our lucky charm,” Iheanacho said.
Safe to say his involvement and advice have worked for the team as the three-time African champions are just one win away from playing in another AFCON final.
Speaking in an interview, the former PSG midfielder revealed he had to get involved because he needed to let the players know what it means to play for Nigeria at the AFCON.
“After I watched our first game, I had the feeling that they needed help. And as a patriotic Nigerian, I can’t be here and notice something and not get involved,” Okocha told Arise TV.
“I could see in terms of leadership, in terms of motivation, in terms of letting the players understand what it means to play for your nation in the Africa Nations Cup because most of these players are not familiar with their roots as they were born in Europe.
“So they needed someone that has been there, that has done it to remind them this is a different competition.
“To let them understand this is a different ball game than what they are used to in Europe, and as well not put them under unnecessary pressure.”
