AFCON 2023: ‘They lack superstars’ – Jay Jay Okocha rates current Nigeria squad

African football legend and midfield maestro, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has faulted the absence of superstars in the current Super Eagles claiming they are not as talented as his sets.
The former Bolton Wanderers star was one of the key players in Nigeria’s golden generation squad that won the AFCON in 1994 and historic Atlanta 1996 Olympics gold winners.
The former PSG star was also a key player in the Nigeria set up that won a silver and two bronze medals at AFCON 2000, 2002, and 2004, respectively and the former captain believes the current set of Super Eagles are yet to match the feat of the Nigerian teams he represented despite having CAF Player of the Year Victor Osimhen in their ranks.
Although, Okocha has been motivating the team every chance he got both physically in the dressing room and on the screen, as Jose Peseiro’s side have been receiving plaudits for their performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have too many superstars in the team,” he told Arise TV.
“They are stars in their own right, don’t get me wrong, but we are still remembered because they have not surpassed our achievements. They have not surpassed our talents.
“They have understood that they have to play to their strength.”
