Ahmed Musa’s Brace Not Enough as Leicester U-23s Bow Out of Checkatrade Trophy

In a riveting clash at Oldham Athletic’s home ground on Wednesday night, Leicester City’s Under-23s faced a disappointing exit from the Checkatrade Trophy following a 4-2 defeat against Oldham Athletic. Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa showcased his prowess, finding the net for Leicester’s youngsters, but ultimately, it fell short against an assertive Oldham side.
The Checkatrade Trophy, an esteemed knock-out tournament now in its 34th season, witnessed the clash between clubs from League One and League Two of the English football system, including the participation of 16 Premier League and Championship “B Teams.”
Despite the valiant efforts by Leicester, which saw them initially take the lead in the 43rd minute courtesy of Josh Knight’s goal, Oldham’s resilience emerged evident as Craig Davies swiftly equalized just after the commencement of the second half.
Davies continued his formidable performance, striking his second goal in the 56th minute, setting the score at 2-1 in favor of Oldham. However, Musa, displaying his striking finesse, pulled Leicester level with an impressive goal in the 68th minute.
The dramatic back-and-forth encounter witnessed Anthony Gerrard reclaiming the lead for Oldham in the 76th minute, followed by Nigerian striker Temitope Obadeyi solidifying Oldham’s triumph with a goal in the 86th minute.
Oldham Athletic’s victory secures them a quarter-final clash against Shrewsbury Town away on January 22, following their impressive display against Leicester’s youthful side. Despite Leicester’s exit, the game showcased moments of skill and determination from both teams, highlighting the competitive spirit of the Checkatrade Trophy tournament.
