Akinkunmi Amoo’s appeal against sexual assault conviction denied in Denmark

Former Nigeria youth international Akinkunmi Amoo has had his appeal against a conviction for sexual assault and attempted sexual assault denied by a court in Denmark.
The former FC Copenhagen winger was sentenced to one year in prison last year for an assault that took place at the Hotel Imperial in Copenhagen.
His sentence includes deportation with a six-year entry ban to Denmark, and he was ordered to cover court costs exceeding 100,000 Danish kroner (approximately 150,000 Swedish kronor).
Despite appealing the conviction in hopes of a different outcome, the Eastern High Court upheld the original judgement. The appeal was denied because Amoo missed the hearing on Monday, reportedly due to not receiving his visa in time.
Judge Jacob Waage, speaking to Danish media outlet Ekstra Bladet, confirmed the appeal’s rejection. “The appeal was rejected as Amoo reportedly missed the hearing on Monday when his appeal was initially scheduled for,” Waage stated.
Amoo’s journey in European football began with Swedish club Hammarby, following his transfer from Sidos FC in the summer of 2020.
His talent quickly shone through, earning him a move to FC Copenhagen two years later. However, his promising career took a drastic turn as he became entangled in serious legal issues in Denmark.
Following the appeal court’s decision, Amoo’s lawyer, Mette Maria Lorentzen, expressed their disappointment and outlined their plans to pursue further legal action.
“We are sorry for the appeal court’s rejection and will seek permission to appeal the case in the Supreme Court,” Lorentzen told Ekstra Bladet.
The case has cast a long shadow over what was once a bright football career, as Amoo now faces the repercussions of his legal troubles while his future in the sport remains uncertain.
