Al-Ahli players urge club to re-sign Franck Kessie as midfield concerns grow
Several Al-Ahli players have asked the club’s administration to strengthen its midfield during the current transfer window, with Franck Kessie identified as one possible solution, according to Saudi newspaper Al Riyadiah.
The players reportedly held a meeting with Rui Pedro, Al-Ahli’s sporting director, during which they stressed the need to sign a new foreign player in the holding midfield position before the start of the new season.
During the meeting, the squad members explained that the midfield required an additional player capable of giving the team greater balance and strength. Their concerns come after a number of changes to the club’s squad in recent weeks.
The players also put forward the possibility of bringing back Ivory Coast international Franck Kessie. They believe the midfielder could provide a familiar and effective option because he already knows the club’s environment and previously produced strong performances in an Al-Ahli shirt.
The request has been made while Al-Ahli continue to assess what their final squad will look like for the new season. The club have seen several key players depart during the recent period, increasing uncertainty over the make-up of the team.
Al-Ahli’s midfield plans are therefore expected to be decided in the coming period. The administration must determine whether to recruit a new foreign player for the holding role or attempt to restore Kessie to the squad.
The report suggests the players’ intervention reflects the importance they attach to strengthening the centre of the team before preparations for the new campaign are completed. Their preference is for a midfielder who can improve the side’s balance and add physical and technical quality, either through a new signing or through the return of a player who is already familiar with the club.
Kessie is being considered by the players because of his previous experience with Al-Ahli and the levels he reached while representing the club. However, the report does not state that a decision has been made or that negotiations over his return are already under way.
Instead, the final choice remains with the Al-Ahli administration, which is expected to settle the issue of the holding midfield position as it continues to shape the squad for the upcoming season.
The original report also included a separate related item concerning a warning from Jose Mourinho and its potential impact on Mohamed Salah’s ambitions.
