Al Ahly defeat Zamalek to secure Handball Club World Cup bronze
Al Ahly claimed the bronze medal at the Handball Club World Cup after beating Egyptian rivals Zamalek 30-25 in the third-place play-off at the New Administrative Capital Hall on Thursday evening.
Al Ahly controlled much of the contest and established a six-goal advantage by half-time, leading 19-13.
Zamalek were unable to overturn the deficit after the interval as Al Ahly maintained their lead to complete victory. Al Ahly player Seif Hany, known as “Fox”, was named player of the match.
ON Sport footage from 1 October 2026 showed Al Ahly taking control during the opening half, before a fast counter-attack allowed Zamalek to reduce the gap with a composed finish from Abdel Ghani.
Another clip showed a prolonged sequence of passing ending with Fox scoring for Al Ahly with a powerful shot.
Al Ahly began their tournament campaign with a 31-23 defeat by Hungarian side Veszprem, but responded with a convincing 35-17 win over Kuwaiti club Burqan.
They completed the group stage with an important 30-27 victory against Fuchse Berlin.
Zamalek opened their campaign with a 40-17 win over Los Angeles of the United States and followed that by beating Moroccan side Darb Sultan 42-17.
They then lost 39-29 to Barcelona in their third group-stage match before recovering to defeat Brazilian club Pinheiros 28-27.
The bronze-medal match brought the two Egyptian clubs together after their contrasting group-stage routes, with Al Ahly ultimately finishing third after their strong first-half performance.
