Al-Ittihad announce Richard Rios signing with Colombian coffee-themed video
Al-Ittihad have announced the signing of Colombia midfielder Richard Rios from Portuguese club Benfica, using a video centred on Colombian coffee rather than the traditional Arabic coffee usually associated with the Saudi club’s transfer reveals.
The announcement was made early on Thursday during the current summer transfer window, although Al-Ittihad did not disclose the financial details of the deal.
In the video, a person asks for a coffee before choosing Colombian beans instead of Ethiopian or Costa Rican coffee. After taking a sip, the footage switches to clips of Rios displaying his skills for Benfica and the Colombia national team.
The choice of Colombian coffee points to Rios’ nationality, while also drawing on the country’s reputation for producing high-quality coffee.
Al-Ittihad’s approach differs from the club’s usual method of presenting new signings. Arabic coffee has often featured in their transfer announcements, reflecting its status as the traditional drink served to guests in Saudi Arabia.
Reports published before the announcement said Rios would join Al-Ittihad on a season-long loan. The agreement is not expected to include an option to buy, with the loan fee reported to be between 3m and 4m euros. Al-Ittihad will also cover the player’s full salary during the temporary move.
The 26-year-old is set to become the fourth midfielder recruited by Al-Ittihad during this summer’s transfer window.
He follows Saudi Arabia internationals Rakan Kaabi, who joined from Al-Fayha, and Mukhtar Ali, who arrived from Al-Ettifaq, as well as Senegal midfielder Dion Lopy, who moved from Spanish club Almeria.
Rios leaves Benfica after only one season with the Portuguese side. He joined them during last summer’s transfer window from Brazilian club Palmeiras in a deal worth 16m euros.
During his time at Benfica, Rios made 51 appearances in all competitions. He scored eight goals and provided six assists.
His arrival comes shortly before Al-Ittihad’s highly anticipated Saudi Pro League meeting with Al-Nassr. The two clubs are due to face each other on Saturday in the fifth round of the Roshn Saudi League.
Al-Ittihad are expected to clarify in the coming hours whether Rios will be available to feature in that match. The club’s announcement was accompanied by a slogan referring to the Colombian’s ability to influence both the mood and the centre of midfield, alongside images of the player’s skills for Benfica and Colombia.
The move gives Al-Ittihad another midfield option as they continue their summer recruitment, while the coffee-themed presentation provides a clear break from the Arabic coffee imagery used in many of the club’s previous announcements.
