Former Nigerian national team goalkeeping coach, Aloysius Agu, believes that Maduka Okoye has the potential to become the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper, despite the impressive performances of the current number one, Stanley Nwabali.

Nwabali has been exceptional for Nigeria, particularly during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where his performances helped guide the Super Eagles to the final. His standout displays included four clean sheets and only four goals conceded in eight matches.

Nwabali also became a hero during the semifinals, saving crucial penalties in the shootout against South Africa, which earned him the Player of the Match accolade.

Currently playing for South African side Chipper United, Nwabali has continued his excellent form in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), helping his team secure a solid sixth-place standing, while showcasing his remarkable penalty-saving ability.

However, Okoye, who has faced criticism following a goalkeeping error during the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, has been making significant strides in his career.

After a solid debut season in Serie A with Udinese, the 24-year-old goalkeeper was recalled to the national team. His development has not gone unnoticed, with Agu praising the young shot-stopper for his growth.

“It is difficult to take a starting spot at top European clubs, but Okoye has made it easy,” Agu said in an interview with Tutto Udinese.

“Maduka cannot afford to relax; he has to continue working hard. I have always known about his talent since his time at Düsseldorf.”

Agu, who played a key role in Okoye and Nwabali’s debuts with the Super Eagles, believes Okoye’s rise is no coincidence. Despite doubts early in his career, Agu saw potential in the goalkeeper and played a pivotal role in bringing him into the national team fold.

“I saw his potential and brought him to the national team, despite not everyone believing in him. It is not a stroke of luck that he has risen through the ranks,” Agu said.

According to Agu, Okoye possesses the attributes necessary to be among the best in Africa, highlighting his age, height, and overall talent. He also emphasized the importance of having two top-quality goalkeepers competing for the number one spot.

“I think he is one of the best goalkeepers in Africa, not only because of his talent but also because of a combination of factors such as age and height,” Agu added. “Having two quality goalkeepers for Nigeria is important.”

At present, Nwabali’s excellent form continues to keep him in the starting position, and Agu believes Okoye must be patient and continue to develop with Udinese. He encouraged Okoye to seize every opportunity to play regularly for his club, as this would position him well for future opportunities with the Super Eagles.

“Nwabali is doing well, and Okoye has to bide his time. Maduka has to play regularly and do well with Udinese so that he is ready when he gets the chance to play for Nigeria too,” Agu concluded.

The battle for the Super Eagles’ goalkeeper spot between Nwabali and Okoye is likely to be one of the most exciting stories for Nigeria as both keepers continue to shine in their respective clubs. For now, the future remains bright for both, and the competition only promises to strengthen the national team’s options between the sticks.
