Amuneke Backs Lookman to succeed Osimhen as CAF Player of the Year

Emmanuel Amuneke, who won the CAF Player of the Year award in 1994, has expressed his belief that Ademola Lookman is a strong contender to succeed Victor Osimhen for this year’s honor.
Amuneke, a former Super Eagles star, previously managed the national youth team that produced Osimhen, who won the award last year after leading Napoli to their first Serie A title in over three decades.
Lookman has had a remarkable season at both club and international levels, playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s AFCON campaign, where he scored three goals in seven appearances.
He made history by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in a Europa League final, contributing significantly to Atalanta’s victory and their first major trophy since 1963.
While CAF has yet to announce the nominees for the award, Lookman’s impressive performances have also earned him a spot on the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist, making him the only African player to achieve this.
Amuneke commented on Lookman’s potential, stating, “He’s in line to be crowned CAF Player of the Year if he continues the way he is doing.”
He praised Lookman’s outstanding performance in a recent match against Rwanda, highlighting his ability to solidify his presence in African football.
Reflecting on the significance of the award, Amuneke added, “If a Nigerian wins it next, it is definitely a joyous one. It’s a thing of great motivation that shows the future is bright for our young players.”
He emphasized the need for continued support for players both in Europe and in local leagues to help foster a thriving football ecosystem.
