Andy Rinomhota confident Zimbabwe can secure historic away win against Nigeria

By Dayo Awoniyi

Zimbabwe midfielder Andy Rinomhota is confident that the Warriors can secure their first-ever away win against Nigeria in 42 years when the two sides meet in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday in Uyo.

Despite Zimbabwe’s poor record against Nigeria, having only won once in eight previous meetings, Rinomhota believes his team is capable of pulling off an upset.

Their last encounter in November 2023, which ended in a 1-1 draw, has given the Warriors renewed confidence ahead of the match.

“We’re optimistic. We got a result against Nigeria last time, even though it was technically a home game in Rwanda,” Rinomhota said.

“That was my first game – it was a big test, and the team did well to draw. This time, we want to go a step further.”

The Warriors face a tough challenge, with the weather conditions in Uyo expected to be hot and humid.

However, Rinomhota is not fazed, recalling the similar conditions they faced against Cameroon in last year’s AFCON qualifiers.

“We’re preparing ourselves, even though the game is later. We had similar conditions against Cameroon last year in the AFCON qualifiers,” he added.

Rinomhota also stressed the growing chemistry within the squad, which he believes will be crucial for their chances of success in Uyo.

“I think we’re building momentum and getting games together, and I’m confident we’ll do well.”

Zimbabwe’s only victory against Nigeria came in 1981, and Rinomhota and his teammates are determined to end the long wait for an away win, hoping to write a new chapter in the nation’s football history.
