Arsenal confident of signing Vinicius Junior as Real Madrid contract talks stall

Arsenal are increasingly confident they can sign Vinicius Junior, with reports in Spain suggesting the London club’s dressing room believes a deal could be completed during the current transfer window.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Arsenal players are now treating the arrival of the Real Madrid forward as a realistic possibility. That optimism is understood to be based on the confidence shown by the club’s hierarchy that it can persuade the Brazil international to move to the Premier League in what would be one of the biggest transfers in English football.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is leading the club’s efforts to secure the deal. He has reportedly outlined to Vinicius the role he would play at Emirates Stadium, as part of an attempt to convince the 24-year-old that a move to England would represent the ideal next step if he decides to end his career with Real Madrid.

Arsenal are believed to have the financial resources required to complete the transfer and are strongly motivated to reach an agreement. At the same time, negotiations over a new contract for Vinicius at Real Madrid have made little progress.

The player’s current deal with the Spanish club expires in fewer than 11 months. Financial differences remain the main obstacle, with reports indicating that Real Madrid do not intend to meet all the demands made by Vinicius and his representatives.

Real Madrid recognise that Arsenal’s interest is serious rather than an attempt to apply pressure in the renewal negotiations. However, the Spanish club is waiting for Vinicius to make a final decision over whether he wants to extend his stay before deciding whether to open formal discussions with Arsenal.

Officials at Real Madrid are expected to tell the player in an upcoming meeting that there is no longer time for negotiations to continue indefinitely. The club’s position is that Vinicius can remain only by signing a new contract on the terms set by Real Madrid, reflecting the long-standing policy summed up by the principle: “No one is bigger than the club.”

Arsenal’s financial position means they are capable of competing for the most expensive players in the transfer market. The club has moved beyond the financial impact of the years following its move to Emirates Stadium and has become one of the biggest spenders in the market.

Arsenal spent 293m euros during last summer’s transfer window, having invested 240m euros in the summer of 2024. Their spending in the current window has reached about 80m euros after the signings of Piero Hincapie, Christos Tzolis and goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The figures underline the scale of the potential operation involving Vinicius, although no agreement has been announced and the player’s final decision remains unclear. Arsenal’s annual revenue is estimated at about 880m euros, compared with 1.221bn euros for Real Madrid.

The latest developments indicate that Vinicius’ future is moving closer to a decisive stage. Arsenal’s interest is growing, while Real Madrid await clarity over whether the Brazilian will renew his contract or seek a new challenge outside Spain.
