Ashleigh Plumptre extends Al Ittihad’s deal

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Saudi Arabia Women’s Premier League side Al-Ittihad Club has announced the renewal of the contract of the first women’s team player, Nigerian international Ashleigh Plumptre for two years.

The club’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Domingos Oliveira, confirmed that renewing the player’s contract comes within the club’s strategy to retain distinguished players who have the desire to develop and serve the team better in the future.

Plumptre joined Al Ittihad from the English Women’s Super League (WSL) side, Leicester City, after the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

She has been a key player with the Saudi side with her goal scoring form as a defender.

The impressive form earned her the captain hand band with the team.

An integral member of Super Falcons, Plumptre played her first tournament with the national team since switching allegiance from England at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

She also made the roster for the last FIFA Women’s World Cup where the team reached the Round of 16 Down Under.

The former Leicester City defender didn’t make the team for the last Olympics in Paris, France due to injury. She is expected to be part of the roster for this year’s WAFCON in Morocco as the Super hope to win their 10th continental title.
