Asisat Oshoala Urges More Preparation for Super Falcons Ahead of African Women’s Cup of Nations

In the wake of her third consecutive African Women’s Footballer of the Year award, Asisat Oshoala, the esteemed striker for the Super Falcons, has emphasized the need for additional friendly matches in preparation for the upcoming 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nations. The call comes on the heels of a friendly encounter with France, a noteworthy initiative for women’s football in Nigeria, but one that Oshoala insists should be augmented.

While expressing her satisfaction with the France friendly, Oshoala articulated her concerns, stating, “It’s a good one, a big step for us and good news for women’s football in Nigeria generally but it’s not enough.” The football luminary, who received her accolade in Accra on Thursday, conveyed her sentiments to BBC Sport, emphasizing the urgency of securing more preparatory matches without the necessity of making explicit appeals.

The Super Falcons are currently in pursuit of a new coach, following the rejection of the offer by American strategist Randy Waldrum. Despite this setback, Oshoala, a key player for Dalian Quanjian FC in the Chinese Women’s League, remains optimistic about the impending announcement of a successor to Florence Omagbemi.

“I’ve had an honest conversation with the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (Amaju Pinnick) about this,” Oshoala affirmed. “He’s been very positive, and in a couple of weeks, we will definitely have someone to lead the team.”

As the anticipation for a new coach builds, Oshoala’s call for enhanced preparations resonates, underscoring the collective aspiration for a formidable performance by the Super Falcons in the forthcoming African Women’s Cup of Nations.
