Atletico Madrid seal Champions League spot through Rasheedat Ajibade’s winner

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Rasheedat Ajibade scored a crucial goal to help Atletico Madrid secure a 1-0 victory over Villarreal in their final match of the 2023/2024 Spanish women’s top-flight season, clinching a place in next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid, holding a one-point lead in third place ahead of Levante UD, knew a win was essential to secure the last Champions League spot from Spain. The hosts started the decisive match with determination, with Ajibade playing a key role in their quest for qualification.

Ajibade, demonstrating her attacking prowess, delivered a cross early in the first half that was headed off target. She continued to be a threat, with another cross leading to a header that hit the crossbar, though her subsequent rebound attempt also missed the mark.

The Nigerian forward was relentless, consistently creating opportunities from the right wing, though her teammates were unable to convert her crosses into goals. Her persistence paid off in the 75th minute when she capitalized on a free kick, scoring the match’s only goal after Villarreal’s defense failed to clear the set piece.

Atletico Madrid had additional chances to extend their lead, including a one-on-one opportunity for Ajibade, who chose to pass to a teammate whose shot was saved. Despite the missed chances, the hosts managed to hold on for the win, securing their qualification for the 2024/2025 UEFA Women’s Champions League.

This victory ensured Atletico finished ahead of Levante UD, who also won their match against Madrid CFF. Atletico Madrid will join champions FC Barcelona and second-placed Real Madrid in representing Spain in the UWCL next season.

Ajibade’s impact throughout the season was significant, contributing 10 goals and six assists in 30 league games, playing a pivotal role in Atletico Madrid’s return to continental competition.
