Awawu Bashiru stars as Nigeria reach first U-17 Women’s World Cup final
Awawu Bashiru scored twice and was named Player of the Match as Nigeria’s U-17 Women’s National Team defeated Brazil 3-1 in the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The result sends the Flamingos into the competition’s final for the first time, extending their impressive run at the tournament.
Bashiru was a constant threat to Brazil throughout the match, operating at the centre of Nigeria’s attacking play and repeatedly testing the South American side’s defence.
Her movement and quick decision-making helped Nigeria maintain pressure, with the youngster eventually making the decisive contribution in the second half.
She scored Nigeria’s second goal in the 71st minute, breaking the deadlock and putting the Flamingos in control of the semi-final.
Bashiru then completed her brace nine minutes later. She calmly converted a precise pass from team-mate Oluebube Umejiaku in the 80th minute to move Nigeria further ahead and put the result beyond Brazil’s reach.
Her performance earned her the Player of the Match award and capped a dominant display in one of the most important matches of Nigeria’s campaign.
The 3-1 victory confirms the Flamingos’ place in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final, with Nigeria continuing its strong tournament on Moroccan soil.
