Ayo Ogunlana, member of the silver-winning Super Eagles at Algiers 1990 Africa Cup of Nations, is dead.

The former Nigeria midfielder was confirmed dead after a brief illness in Kaduna.

Ogunlana was known for his trademark free kicks and also played for Leventis United and Ranchers Bees of Kaduna.

Ayo played for DIC Bees and was easily the toast of the team, the celebrated dead ball expert.

Ogunlana, who played for Leventis United and Ranchers Bees, reportedly died on Friday morning following a brief illness.

He was an influential member of Nigeria’s silver-winning squad at Algiers ’90 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ogunlana was a master of his craft, and his combination in midfield with the likes of late Thompson, Oliha, Moses Kpakor, and Wasiu Ipaye steered the Super Eagles to the final of the tournament, which they lost to hosts Algeria.

Paying tribute to Ogunlana, his close associate, Ogunsanya Tolulope, said, “The passing of Elder Ayo Ogunlana, a distinguished Senior Citizen of Nigeria, on the 14th of February 2025 is truly heartbreaking and difficult to accept.

“His remarkable contributions to football, representing Nigeria nationally and internationally, will forever be etched in history and serve as a source of inspiration for future generations.

“A man of impeccable integrity, he was not only a prolific goalscorer but also a hardworking businessman, guided by admirable principles and unwavering discipline. His deep commitment to unity, peace, and the prosperity of our great nation, Nigeria, was evident in all he did.

“Without notice, he departed this world, leaving behind a legacy worthy of national honor. His impact is undeniable, and his memory will continue to shine. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”
