Babajide inspires Super Falcons to 6-2 win over Egypt and WAFCON 2026 quarter-finals
Omorinsola Babajide praised her Super Falcons teammates after Nigeria ended their WAFCON 2026 Group C campaign with a 6-2 victory over Egypt on Wednesday.
Babajide produced a decisive performance in the emphatic win, registering two assists as the Super Falcons secured the result they needed to reach the quarter-finals. Her contribution made her the standout player of the match, and she was subsequently named Player of the Match.
The forward played a key role in two of Nigeria’s goals. She supplied Gift Monday, who scored to put the Super Falcons 2-0 ahead, before creating another opportunity for Uchenna Kanu to score Nigeria’s fourth goal.
Her influence was recognised after the final whistle, with Babajide celebrating the team’s display and expressing her affection for her fellow players in a message posted on her X handle.
“THANK YOU JESUS 🥹🥹🥹❤️❤️❤️ I LOVE THIS TEAMMM!!!!”
The victory gave the Super Falcons six points from their three Group C matches and confirmed their place in the knockout stage. Nigeria finished second in the group after recording wins over Zambia and Egypt.
Debutants Malawi also ended the group phase with six points, but claimed top spot despite suffering a 2-1 defeat by Zambia.
The result against Egypt therefore completed a successful group campaign for the Super Falcons, who followed their victory over Zambia with another convincing win to progress to the quarter-finals.
Babajide’s two assists were central to the outcome, with the forward directly involved in the goals scored by Gift Monday and Uchenna Kanu. Her performance also provided the individual highlight of a match in which Nigeria secured a 6-2 triumph.
With the group matches now complete, the Super Falcons move on to the quarter-finals as Group C runners-up. Malawi’s position at the top of the section means the debutants finished ahead of Nigeria despite their loss to Zambia in the final round of fixtures.
