Barcelona take new step in pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez

Barcelona have stepped up their efforts to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez after sporting director Deco travelled to Madrid for talks with the Argentina striker’s representative, Fernando Hidalgo.

Deco, accompanied by his assistant Joao Amaral, is expected to hold a highly confidential meeting with Hidalgo, according to the Catalan press. The discussions form part of Barcelona’s continuing attempt to assess whether a deal for Alvarez can be made, despite Atletico’s firm determination to keep one of the key players in Diego Simeone’s team.

The meeting is not being presented as evidence that an agreement is close or that a transfer has been completed. Instead, it is intended to clarify the position of Alvarez and his representatives, establish the possible next steps and examine the prospects of completing what Barcelona expect to be a highly complicated operation.

Alvarez has remained at the top of Barcelona’s attacking priorities for several weeks as the club considers ways to strengthen its forward options. Since joining Atletico Madrid from Manchester City, the 2022 World Cup winner has quickly established himself as one of the leading strikers in the Spanish league.

That form has made him a major target for Barcelona, but Atletico’s position has remained consistent. The Madrid club regard Alvarez as a central part of Simeone’s sporting project and have no intention of giving up a player they consider fundamental to their plans.

Barcelona nevertheless continue to work behind the scenes rather than abandon their interest. According to Sport, the meeting in Madrid represents another stage in a strategy developed by the Catalan club over several months. The club still regards Alvarez as a top priority and wants to maintain direct contact with his camp in case circumstances change.

Barcelona officials are seeking a clearer understanding of the player’s position and that of his representatives while preparing for a range of possible outcomes. They believe Alvarez’s desire to move to Camp Nou could provide them with an important advantage.

However, the club also recognises that the player’s personal preference alone would not be enough to force open negotiations with Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side remain unwilling to lose one of their principal players, making the involvement of the player’s camp only one part of a much broader challenge.

The meeting is also designed to strengthen strategic alignment between Barcelona and Hidalgo’s team. Barcelona want to preserve a close relationship with the agent so they are ready to respond if the situation develops in their favour during the coming months.

The club’s objective is to create a plan that could either persuade Atletico to consider a transfer or allow Barcelona to take advantage of any change in the circumstances. The Catalan club are aware that the relationship between the two sides is complicated and that several obstacles remain.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta and Deco believe, however, that ending the pursuit now would carry significant risk. As long as the possibility remains open, the club intends to proceed carefully and continue exploring a potential move for Alvarez, even though Atletico Madrid’s resistance means there is no guarantee the transfer can be completed.
