Barnsley Manager praises Kelechi Nwakali after win against Exeter City

Barnsley manager Darrell Clarke has praised Kelechi Nwakali for his crucial contribution in his side’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Exeter City at St. James Park on Saturday.

The Nigerian midfielder was handed his first league start in the absence of Adam Phillips, who was suspended for the match.

Nwakali, who had previously featured in four league matches as a substitute, made a significant impact in the game.

He scored a stunning goal early in the second half, helping Barnsley come from behind to secure a vital win in their push for Championship promotion.

Speaking to Barnsley media after the match, Clarke highlighted Nwakali’s improved fitness and development since joining the club.

The 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner had struggled with fitness issues after missing pre-season preparations, but his performance against Exeter demonstrated how far he has come.

“He played really well,” Clarke said. “I am happy with his development. We have put his fitness level up, and now he’s fitter and much sharper. We already know the talent he has technically. He got us kicked off in the second half.”

Clarke also reflected on the overall performance, acknowledging that while the team deserved the win, their recent performances have been much better than what was shown against Exeter. Nonetheless, he emphasized the importance of the three points.

“It was bitter-sweet. We deserved the win, but we’ve performed miles better in the last five or six games than we did today. Still, it was a big three points for us,” he concluded.
