Bayelsa Queens Edge FC Robo Queens as WAFU Zone B Qualifiers Loom

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Bayelsa Queens FC continued their strong preparations for the upcoming 2025 WAFU Zone B Qualifiers with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over fellow NWFL Premiership side FC Robo Queens on Thursday at the Maracana Stadium in Ajegunle, Lagos.
Goals from Chiamaka Ezekwugo and Mary Aderemi were enough to see off a resilient FC Robo side, as the Prosperity Girls wrapped up their playing tour on a high ahead of continental competition.
The match began with early intensity, and in the 6th minute, FC Robo had a chance to take the lead when Esther Onyenezede was fouled in the box by Amblessed Ogbonnaya. Onyenezede stepped up for the penalty but fired wide, letting Bayelsa Queens off the hook.
Bayelsa took full advantage minutes later, as Chiamaka Ezekwugo headed home a pinpoint corner from Shakirat Moshood in the 17th minute to put the Prosperity Girls in front at halftime.
FC Robo Queens equalized in the 58th minute through Opeyemi Ajakaye, but Bayelsa quickly responded. Mary Aderemi restored the lead in the 67th minute after a clever assist from Dooshima Tarnum, and the visitors held firm to secure the 2-1 win.
“Strong Preparations and Promising Signs” – Coach Ogbonda
Bayelsa Queens’ Technical Adviser, Whyte Ogbonda, praised his team’s performance during the tour.
“Generally, the team has done well. We’ve played six matches, won five, and drawn one — and this is good preparation,” he said.
“We’ve seen some grey areas, and once we return to Yenagoa, we’ll make corrections. I’m very impressed with the girls’ performance.”
Club Chairman Apreala Commends State Support
Club Chairman Pastor Robin Angonimi Apreala also expressed satisfaction with the team’s form.
“From my assessment, they have done well. The coaches will address some of the gaps observed, but the girls have represented Bayelsa proudly.”
He also extended heartfelt appreciation to Governor Douye Diri, Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Commissioner for Sports Daniel Igali, Dr. Peter Singabele, and other stakeholders for their unwavering support.
Over the course of the tour, Bayelsa Queens played six matches, won five, drew one, scored 17 goals, and conceded just four, signaling their readiness to contend on the continental stage.
