Bounce Back as Champions: NIS Boss Philip Shaibu Rallies Super Falcons Ahead of Crucial World Cup Qualifier
Following their recent exit from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has charged Nigeria’s Super Falcons to put the setback behind them and sharpen their focus for Thursday’s pivotal World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
Shaibu made the call in the wake of Nigeria’s campaign-ending defeat to Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses in the WAFCON quarter-finals. With the upcoming clash against South Africa scheduled for Thursday, August 13, the NIS chief emphasized the need for immediate mental recovery and tactical preparation.
“Setbacks are part of sport, but what defines champions is their ability to bounce back,” Shaibu stated, urging both players and technical handlers to keep their confidence intact.
Reminding the squad of their unrivaled legacy as 10-time continental champions, Shaibu noted that Nigeria’s rich history should serve as a source of motivation rather than a burden. He called on the technical team to foster a positive environment and ensure the squad is fully prepared—physically and mentally—for the high-stakes showdown.
According to Shaibu, the team must channel the trademark “never-die Nigerian spirit” and exhibit the resilience that has long made Nigeria a dominant power in African women’s football.

“Rather than criticism, Nigerians should pray for them and rally behind them as they chase the World Cup ticket,” Shaibu urged.
