BREAKING: NFF orders Super Falcons technical crew to resign after Wafcon debacle

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Executive Committeeon Monday directed members of the Super Falcons technical crew to step down with immediate effect, following Nigeria’s disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign and failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The federation announced the decision in a brief notice published on its official social media platforms, stating: “The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect.”

The announcement effectively brings the current technical arrangement of the Super Falcons to an end and comes in the aftermath of Nigeria’s historic failure to qualify for the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition began in 1991.

The Super Falcons’ campaign in Morocco ended in disappointment after they failed to secure the qualification ticket for the 2027 global tournament, despite entering the competition as one of Africa’s traditional powerhouses.

The decision also follows growing calls for a technical review of the team after the WAFCON setback, with questions raised over tactics, squad selection, player management and the overall direction of the national team.

It remains unclear whether the NFF’s directive applies to the entire technical team or whether specific members will be retained in another capacity. The federation is also yet to announce an interim arrangement or name a replacement for the outgoing technical leadership.

The development leaves the NFF with the immediate responsibility of finding a new technical direction for the Super Falcons, particularly with the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign approaching.

Nigeria’s Olympic qualification campaign is scheduled to begin in October 2026, with the Super Falcons set to face Comoros.

The NFF will now be under pressure to move swiftly, as another prolonged coaching vacuum could further disrupt preparations for the Olympic qualifying series and the rebuilding of a team that has suffered one of the most significant setbacks in its history.

More details are expected from the NFF on the reasons behind the decision and the next steps for the Super Falcons.
