Busari hails Flamingos’ fighting spirit after Venezuela win
Nigeria head coach Akeem Busari praised his players for their determination after the Flamingos secured a 1–0 victory over Venezuela to reach the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Venezuela arrived at the Mohammed VI Football Complex with confidence after eliminating Germany in the Round of 16, but Nigeria prevented the tournament’s giant-killers from building on that result.
The South American side was largely restricted to counter-attacking opportunities, creating four clear chances during the match. Nigeria goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho dealt comfortably with each of them as the Flamingos maintained control of the contest.
The decisive moment came late in the second half when striker Olubebe Umejiaku was brought down inside the penalty area following a quick attacking move.
Referee Hyeonjeong Oh awarded a penalty immediately, and the decision was upheld after a VAR review. Nigeria captain Aishat Oduntan took responsibility from the spot, sending the Venezuelan goalkeeper the wrong way to secure her side’s place in the last four.
The result takes Nigeria back to the semi-finals for the first time since 2022.
Speaking to FIFA.com after the final whistle, Busari said his players had shown the character required to overcome a difficult challenge.
“We gave everything on the pitch tonight. We wanted to keep the ball and play our game, but we made some mistakes. Still, we kept pushing until the very end,” he said.
“Reaching the semi-finals is a dream come true for me and a great achievement.”
Busari also said the team was focused on representing Nigeria positively in the next round.
“I’m looking forward to it because I want to make my country proud,” he added. “We want to give our best in the next match and show everyone what we can do.”
