CAF approves new venue, time for Nigeria’s clash against Guinea-Bissau

By Wale Mustapha

The Confederation of African Football, has approved a new venue the Matchday Four of 2023 African Cup of Nations, AFCON qualifying match between Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria.

The match between the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau and Super Eagles of Nigeria was earlier billed for Morocco after CAF refused to grant approval for Guinea-Bissau to host the game on home soil.

Guinea-Bissau’s two stadiums – Estadio 24 de Setembro and Estadio Lino Correia – were then failed to meet CAF’s requirements to host international matches.

That led to another round of intensive renovation at one of the venues (Nacional 24 de Setembro Stadium) which has now met the satisfactions of the continent’s soccer ruling body.

The match will now be played on Monday, 27th of March, 2023 at 5pm (Nigerian time).

Nigeria will first play host to Guinea-Bissau in the first leg of the doubleheader at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on March 24.

The Super Eagles are leading Group A with six points after beating Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe last year.

The three times AFCON winners defeated Guinea-Bissau by 2-0 the last time both teams met at the Africa Cup of Nations group stages in Cameroon last year with goals coming from William Troost Ekong and Sadiq Umar.
