By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Assistant captain of Plateau United, Daniel Itodo has apologised to Nigerians because his team conceded a goal at home against Libyan side, Al Akhdar.
Plateau United were cruising to a 3-0 lead before conceding a goal and later earned a 4-1 win over Al Akhdar in the first leg of the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup Playoff.
“We are very sorry for the goal conceded and want everyone in Nigeria to believe in us just as they have been believing in us. If the Libyan side can come to Nigeria and get a goal, we can equally go there and score,” Itodo said on Brila FM this week.
“We just want Nigerians to continue to support us and give us the maximum support. They should believe in us and we are going to come back with something. I assure them that we are going to qualify for the group stage.”
Goals from Ibrahim Mustapha and Onyebuchi Ifeanyi had given Plateau United a 2-0 lead at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Albert Hilary increased Plateau United’s lead to three in the 75th minute before Al Akhdar reduced the deficit with a precious away goal.
He also converted Plateau United’s fourth goal in the additional minutes of the second half to ensure that his side recorded a 4-1 triumph over the Libyan side.
The win was Plateau United’s third on the continent this year after defeating Stade Mandji of Gabon and Esperance Tunis of Tunisia at home in the CAF Champions League before dropping to the CAF Confederation Cup.
The return leg will take place on November 9, 2022, in Libya with the winner making it to the group stage of the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup
