CAF Confederation Cup: Kwara United crash out after defeat to Kotoko

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria’s Kwara United saw their CAF Confederation Cup campaign come to an early end after falling 1-0 at home to Ghana’s Asante Kotoko in the second leg of the first preliminary round on Sunday in Abeokuta.

Having lost 4-3 in the first leg in Kumasi, the Ilorin-based side needed a response at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, but it was Kotoko who delivered the decisive moment.

Hubert Gyau struck in the 52nd minute, extending the Porcupine Warriors’ aggregate advantage to 5-3.

Despite late pressure from the Federation Cup winners, Kwara United failed to find a breakthrough and bowed out of continental football at the first hurdle.

The result means Asante Kotoko progress to the next preliminary round, while Kwara United will now refocus on the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), where they’ll aim to finish in the top three to secure another continental ticket.

They also have the chance to return to the Confederation Cup if they can retain their President Federation Cup crown.
