CAF lists Osimhen among top 10 players to watch at Africa Cup of Nations 2023

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

With a few days to the kick-off of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has listed Nigeria forward, Victor Osimhen as one of the top 10 players to watch out for.

The 34th edition of the AFCON is sure to showcase arrays of football talents from January 13 to February 11, 2024.

At the age of 25, the Napoli forward who recently ended Nigeria’s 24-year wait by winning the Africa Player of the Year award is one of the young players on CAF’s top 10 players list of talents on the Africa Football governing body website.

“It’s hard not to include the Best African Player of the Year in this thread. Victor Osimhen, fresh from his recent accolade as the best African footballer, is celebrating his new status on the continental stage. He is the figurehead of Nigeria’s rich attacking frontline, which he will have to guide in Côte d’Ivoire.” CAF stated.

Osimhen is the only Nigerian player that made the list with the other nine players coming from different countries as well.

They include Sadio Mane (Senegal), Vincent Aboubakar (Cameroon), Sehrou Guirassy (Guinea), Sebastien Halle (Cote d’Ivoire), and Mohamed Amoura (Algeria).

Others are Azzedine Ounahi (Morocco), Mohammed Kudus (Ghana), Mohamed Sallah (Egypt), and Peter Shalulile (Namibia).

Osimhen is expected to play a pivotal role in the Super Eagles quest to claim their fourth African title after helping Napoli clinch the Italian Serie A trophy last season for the first time after Diego Maradona era.
