Championship: Josh Maja marks starting return with match-winner for West Brom

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Nigerian-born forward Josh Maja made a dream return to West Bromwich Albion’s starting XI on Wednesday night, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Norwich City at Carrow Road.

The Nigerian striker, making his first start since January, found the net in the first half with a composed finish into the bottom corner — his first goal of the 2025/26 Championship campaign — earning the Baggies a vital three points on the road.

Maja’s goal proved to be the difference in a cagey contest, as Ryan Mason’s side held firm to secure a clean sheet and climb further up the table.

Speaking after the match, the 25-year-old expressed his delight at returning to action and thanked the manager for the opportunity.

“It was amazing to be in the starting XI after a while,” Maja said.

“I was really looking forward to the opportunity and I thank the gaffer for giving me the chance.

“Scoring the winner was a brilliant feeling, but earning the win was the most important thing tonight.

“Scoring goals is one of my strengths and I want this to be the start of a spell for me where I score as many as possible — which is what any forward wants.”

The goal ends a frustrating spell on the sidelines for Maja, who has worked his way back to fitness after injury setbacks earlier in the year.

His sharpness and composure in front of goal were on full display, offering Albion a timely boost in their attacking ranks.

West Brom will hope the performance marks the beginning of a consistent run for Maja, as the club continues its push for promotion contention.
