Rivers States Commissioner of Sports Chris Green says that Rivers United must beat Wydad and qualify to the next round of the CAF Champions League to earn the $40,000 promised to each player by Governor Nyesom Wike.
The Pride of Rivers face a difficult task, that of beating African champions, Wydad Club Athletic of Casablanca.
The first leg played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt saw Rivers United came from a goal down to beat Wydad 2-1. Now they must get a good result in Casablanca to get the promise from Governor Wike.
“The players will get the money if they win the ticket to the group stage. It means they have to beat Wydad on Sunday,” the Sports Commissioner told Guardian.
And the Commissioner decried the mentality of some section of Nigerian football fans whom he said did not give his team a chance of making it to the next round.
“Nobody gave Rivers United the chance of beating the defending champions. Many Nigerians thought Wydad would overrun our boys so easily. That mentality by some Nigerian football fans is very bad.”
The team hopes to fly out to Casablanca on Tuesday in order to settle in and adapt to the climate but this is dependent on their getting an aircraft that is bound for Morocco.
“We want to go to Morocco early for the players to settle down ahead of the return leg on Sunday, October 16,” Green disclosed.
“The problem we are having is the issue of space in the airline. If we get a green light tomorrow (On Tuesday) the team will leave immediately.”
